LECTURES

Week 1 / Introduction to the Module
I started the week with five pre-recorded videos given by Ms. Jinchi. The videos consisted of topics of Elements & Principles of Design, Contrast & Gestalt Theory, Balance & Emphasis, Repetition & Movement, Harmony & Unity and Symbol, Word & Image. Next, in the first class with Ms. Jinchi, she gave us a brief on the module; what to expect, what assignments will we be tasked with, what reference to use, and so on, including our exercise 1. Additionally, she showed us samples of work done by the previous students to give us an idea of how should we do the assignments. And finally, the tasks assigned to us for the week are that we should start creating our blog and doing exercise 1.

What did I learn in week 1?

Elements & Principles of Design

Elements of Design
     -
it is a building block of design
-it consisted of eight visual elements and those are point, line, shape, form, texture, color, value, and space

source: https://www.onlinedesignteacher.com/2015/11/design-elements_91.html

Principles of Design
-principles of design is basically how we manipulate our elements of design
-balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm,     and Unity are the seven principles of design

Contrast & Gestalt Theory

Contrast Theory
     -
the meaning of contrast is difference
-color drawing and pencil have contrast
-there are two types of contrast, one of which is strong while the other is weak
-strong contrast means there are equally dark and light values
-weak contrast meaning the values of dark or light either overwhelm the other or are overshadowed by the other

source: https://254-online.com/contrast-principle-of-design/

Gestalt Theory
-this can be broken down into six design principles which are called figure & ground
, similarity, proximity, closure, continuity, and order

Week 2 / Feedback of Exercise 1
This week was a feedback week of Exercise 1. We had only to show Ms. Jinchi our progress on exercise 1; she wanted to know the ideas and thought of the process we came up with. And we were reminded by Ms. Jinchi that we have to submit our Exercise 1 by Sunday and can start with Exercise 2 if we have done Exercise 1.

Week 3 / Exercise 2
It is the start of Exercise 2, as we were supposed to start last week. Miss would check our progress of exercise 2 in the class. As for me, I didn't start last week, so I was in a pinch, but I was able to create some sketches in the class while Miss was going through others' work one by one.

What did I learn in week 3?

Emphasis, Balance, Movement & Repetition

Emphasis
-the portion of the design that draws the eye of the viewer by making one stand out more than the other

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/221309769175391367/

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/351912450322903/

Balance
-It is the symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial arrangement of pieces within a composition to give the sense of equal weight or priority

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/21744010688350928/

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/644577765386972835/

Movement
-It involves directing the user's attention in composition to a specified path

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/560909328597082563/

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/403353710347454280/

Repetition
-It simply means reusing the same or similar elements throughout the making of your design

https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/517210338428374273/

Week 4 / Exercise 2 Feedback
It is week 4, and this week, we were only given feedback from our lecturer for our exercise 2 task. She wanted to see our exercise 2 progress and what we changed after receiving feedback from Miss a week before.

Week 5 / Exercise 3
We are tasked with Exercise 3 this week. As we made a little progress on exercise 3 this week in the class itself, Ms. Jinchi, as usual, would check our progress. As for me, I did a rough sketch to present to Ms. Jinchi that I have specific ideas on what I want to do for exercise 3.

What did I learn in week 5?

Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Image, and Word

Harmony
-a combination of similar or related elements that gives a visual that is satisfying in a sense

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/584060645427963261/

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/21744010690038163/

Unity
-a form of other principles combined into one pleasing aesthetical design
-it is pretty similar to another principle called Harmony

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/336362665928685713/

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/686799011936553659/

Symbol
-Symbol is basically a logo that we tend to see every day in our daily life wherever we go, such as the stop sign, Mcdonald's, etc

source: https://www.istockphoto.com/photos/stop-sign

source: https://1000logos.net/mcdonalds-logo/

Image and Word
-when designing in general, it is essential to use the right image and word because it needs to relate to what you are trying to convey to others when designing

Week 6 / Exercise 3 Feedback
With the feedback given by Ms. Jinchi last week, I made many changes to my design and came up with a final design. This week is the final feedback that will be given by her for exercise 3 before submitting it on Sunday.

TASKS

Week 1 / Exercise 1: Contrast & Gestalt Theory Part 1

We were given a task to finish sketches of Contrast & Gestalt Theory by the next class, including where we got the ideas and their description. And as I was researching contrast theory design, I found some inspirations, which ultimately gave me a clue or two on what kind of contrast designs I could come up with.

Contrast Theory

After researching for a while, I found this friendly and straightforward contrast design; the way the artist uses the color orange to show the shadow effect of the man was a nice touch. Therefore, I decided to use this to inspire my contrast design

source: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/555279829067102887/

I tried experimenting with different colors and shapes to give my design the contrast effect needed. And after finally coming up with two designs. So here are the two designs.

Gestalt Theory

Moving forward to Gestalt Theory, I decided to use the images below I found on Pinterest as my inspiration for my gestalt design.

After exploring the ideas, these are the two gestalt designs I came up with. I have implemented the closure and figure & ground principle in these designs.

Week 2 / Exercise 1: Contrast & Gestalt Theory Finale
As Sunday was approaching (the deadline for exercise 1, by the way), I had to submit each contrast and gestalt one design. And I couldn't choose one; I decided to ask my three friends which one they preferred more.

Here is their opinion on my designs:

1st friend

2nd friend

3rd friend

According to the majority votes, these designs won the highest vote. But, at the same time, I agree with their picks as I like those two as well.

Week 3 / Exercise 2: Repetition, Movement, Balance & Emphasis Part 1
Exercise 2 consists of repetition, movement, balance,         and emphasis. We are tasked to pick two of those elements and create a design for each of the two selected elements. After a few thoughts, I chose Repetition and Balance for this part of the exercise. And here are sketches of both Repetition and Balance:

When I decided to do Repetition and Balance Design, I started with visual research of Repetition Design. And here are some designs I found that inspired my drawing design of repetition:

I like how the eyes repeat themselves in the design, and I tried doing it in my own style. And here are my designs using the two images above as inspiration:

Proceeding with Balance Design, here's a visual research on it:

This picture gave me an idea of what design I should make, and here are the designs I came up with:

Week 4 / Exercise 2: Repetition, Movement, Balance & Emphasis Final Part
After getting feedback from Miss Jinchi, I decided to do a little more visual research on Balance Design. And adjusted my Repetition Design according to what Miss told me.

More visual research on Balance Design:

In honesty, my idea stays the same; the combination of good and evil would create an outstanding balance, I thought. So here is my new design for Balance Design:

Improved Balance Design

And as for my Repetitive Design, since Miss Jinchi was interested in one of my designs, I decided to add more eyes around the design to give more depth.

Improved Repetition Design

Even with these improved designs, there was still more feedback given by Miss Jinchi. And finally, after a few more tweaks to my designs, these are the final designs for both Balance and Repetition Designs.

Week 5 / Exercise 3: Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Image, and Word Part 1
Similar to the previous two exercises, we are tasked to pick two elements out of the five given this week and create a design for both of the elements of our choice. And I have decided that I would pick Unity and Symbol.

To start with, I did a little visual research on what design I should come up with for Unity. And I found that a few packs of roses, black and white, are considered Unity. So I decided to create or blend a few various flowers to create a Unity.

Using this image above, I tried to scramble down an idea on how should I blend the flowers together to create Unity, and here is what I came up with. And it is a  lazy attempt made by me.

Unity Design Sketch 1

Interestingly though, for the second element, Symbol, I came up with a great idea (in my opinion), which is to create a symbol using one of my favorite shows of all time, One Piece, as an inspiration. Here are some One Piece symbols to give an idea of how and what am I inspired by this show.

With these inspirations, I tried creating a Symbol totally inspired by this show with my own styles and twist. Here is what I came up with at the moment.

Symbol Design Sketch 1

As you can see, it is very mechanical. I tried to relate the Symbol to mechanical or engineering stuff, but I am still not sure what to say about the Symbol yet.

Week 6 / Exercise 3: Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Image, and Word Final Part
Few feedbacks were given last week. And with the feedback, I have made a few changes to my design and finally managed to create a final design for both of the elements I chose.

First up is Unity Design; last week, I attempted a lazy sketch as I had no idea how to blend the flowers to create a Unity the previous week. However, with little feedback and more research, I have finally come up with a final sketch.

Campanula Flower

As you can see from the images shown above, I am trying to create an element of Unity where it uses the hand as the base of it. I find feminine hands holding flowers to be an aesthetic and Unity feeling. Also, I showed a few flowers because I am trying to tell which flowers I will be using in my drawing, and it is a reference, too,                           in a way.

Improved Unity Design

My Symbol Design apparently was great, as told by Ms. Jinchi, but since I was not able to explain the meaning behind it, I was given the task of finding a purpose for it. And as I was searching for the definition, I updated it a little bit, the sketch I mean, and found meaning along the way.

Did you know that a mechanical workplace can be hazardous for people, especially children? Because it involves heavy machinery, toxic substances, fire, explosives, and more. This is why it is vital to have a Symbol similar to a stop sign so people would avoid such places and even go near them. Here is the Symbol sign I specifically made for this.

Improved Symbol Design

More feedback was given by Ms. Jinchi, and with it, I updated my design to an even better design. And here is the final version of both elements.

FEEDBACKS
Exercise 1: Contrast & Gestalt Theory
Week 1
There was no feedback on week 1.

Week 2
Just a quick reminder to show exploration and include the sources link. I wasn't done during the class, so I couldn't get feedback from Miss.

Exercise 2: Repetition, Movement, Balance & Emphasis

Week 3
I chose Repetition and Balance for exercise 2.

Repetition: Miss was interested in my design; she said it was interesting, but one feedback from her was to spread my repetitive design more as it was crammed together in the design.

Balance: According to Miss, the Balance Design wasn't that great as the design was straightforward, making a line in the middle. She advised me to blend the drawing to make it unique.

Week 4
Repetition: Miss said the eyes around my character could be more realistic and not feel stiff.

Balance: Miss is interested in my improved Balance Design, but she said I could add a little color to give it more depth.

Exercise 3: Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Image, and Word

Week 5
I chose Unity and Symbol for exercise 3

Unity: It is interesting and a good idea overall. I was given tips to maybe add the flowers to a basket or on something; I need a base so it will be neater and not scattered around.

Symbol: She was confused about what I really meant with the design as, at that time of the day, I had no explanation for why I had created the design. Because of this, she told me that every logo has a particular meaning to its creator, and I need to find that for my design.

Week 6
Unity: She was surprised as my design was actually super nice. She questioned me, of course, how I drew it. I told her that I used reference, and then she recommended I put up the reference in progress too.

Symbol: I found the meaning behind my design, and she agreed to it. She told me my idea was pretty neat, and its design was good. But she told me maybe not to put the bar in the drawing, just the plate, which I eventually did.

REFLECTION

Exercise 1 / Contrast & Gestalt Theory

It took me a while to figure out Contrast & Gestalt Theory because it was the first time I encountered such a theory. But from a few videos the lecturer gave and pre-recorded, I learned what contrast and gestalt are. In my opinion, the contrast was pretty straightforward, while on the other hand, gestalt was quite challenging. It took me ages to finish the gestalt design, although it was confirmed that I started the exercise later in the week. But, overall, I believe I did pretty fine with contrast and gestalt designs. I would definitely do a lot more contrast and gestalt designs in the future.

Exercise 2 / Emphasis, Repetitive, Balance & Movement
I love Exercise 2; it challenges my creative skill to make a unique design for each category. I also love the process where my design improves after each feedback given by Miss Jinchi. Overall, this exercise has been fun, even though I might have submitted it late due to sleeping early in the day.

Exercise 3 / Harmony, Unity, Symbol, Image, and Word
Like the other exercises, I find this exercise fun as I am exploring more about other elements that definitely elaborate my knowledge. Sketching the Symbol was definitely fun; imagine being able to create your own logo; that excites me. And my Unity design was probably one of my sketches so far. I got feedback from Ms. Jinchi; every help was helpful as these exercises helped me improve my drawing skills, especially in coloring (she pushed me to do more color, which definitely helped me improve, thank you).
