LECTURES

Week 1 / Lecture 1
Our lecturer, Ms. Noranis and Mr. Hafiz welcomed us in our first class. After their introduction, they briefed us on Illustration & Visual Narrative, the assignments we will be expecting to be given, the platforms we will be using throughout the semester, and the materials recommendation for the assignments. We were told to play The Bezier Game in our first class to get the feeling of drawing with a mouse and were tasked with the Vormator Challenge. My first impression of the module has been great; I have never done Vormator Challenge before and am excited to do it.

Week 2 / Lecture 2
A kick start of the week, we were taught on how to use Adobe Illustrator by Mr Hafiz such as the uses of pen tool, how to trace, how to create a new layer and etc. I notice that the way of using the pen tool was pretty similar to the last week's game everyone played, The Bezier Game.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to do it during the class as I had not been able to log into Adobe Illustrator with my Taylors email. Anyhow, we also learn about character designs from Ms Noranis, that the character needs to feel iconic, simple and unique.

Lastly, we were told to write a 300 words brief report on one cartoon or anime character of our pick.

Lecture Report 1

Fig. 2.4 - 2.6 Tony Tony Chopper Old Design
5th April 2022

Tony Tony Chopper is one of my favourite characters from One Piece, mainly because of his personality-wise. In One Piece, Chopper is the doctor of Luffy's crew (the captain) and a pirate. What makes him likeable? It is the way he is able to express his emotions exaggeratedly that makes him iconic and likeable. Chopper has two designs; one is the old design, which is pretty dull; therefore, it has less impact on expressing emotions, which does not match his exaggerative expressions, in my opinion.

Fig. 2.7 - 2.8 Tony Tony Chopper New Design
5h April 2022

Compared to his old design, the new design is undoubtedly brighter, shinier and fresher, a definite suit for his personality. In addition, he is much more circular in shape, and it shows a contrast to other long and thin characters.

Fig. 2.10 Chopper Guard Point Form
5th April 2022

Fig. 2.7 Chopper Horn Point Form
5th April 2022

Chopper is also able to change his forms at will. He has various them; one is the heavy point which gives him the ability to deal massive damage to his opponents. As you can see here, his whole appearance has changed; he's gotten bigger and muscular, making it evident that he's more potent in this form to us, the viewer.

Next, is the guard point, which points to his defence getting stronger. The fact that he becomes even more circular and furry, hiding his hands and legs here represents a shape looking like a shield. And shield means higher defence power. With his fur, he is able to withstand almost any attack.

As for his third form, it is called the horn point. He gets more prominent and thicker antlers, resembling a stag beetle. In this form, Chopper's human forearms have become larger, and he has hooves. Chopper's face is similar to that of his Brain Point, and he also has a hairier back. He has become taller as well and is now skilled in digging. He has a few more other forms, too, but I am not going to mention everything here.

Week 3 / Lecture 3
In week 3, Mr Hafiz taught us various things, such as the uses of shape builder, how to add and subtract a shape, and to combine and merge using pathfinder. Then proceeding to Mr Anis, she taught us about Chiaroscuro. Chiaroscuro uses the contrast between light and dark to emphasize and illuminate the main figures in a painting or drawing.

Then before the class end, we were task with Lecture Report 2 by Anis. In Lecture Report, we are suppose get one scene and talks about how it utilize chiaroscuro lighting.

Lecture Report 2

Fig. 3.0 Fire Force Benimaru punches an Infernal
14th April 2022

This scene comes from an anime titled Fire Force. Fire Force is an anime about gifted humans fighting a demon called infernal with a fire ability. The author of the anime is Atsushi Okubo. This scene is specifically from episode 14 of season 1, Fire Force, where a character name Benimaru punches an Infernal in a fight between them, which leads to the Infernal exploding to its death. To give more details, in the anime, the Infernal had launched an all-out attack in a town where Benimaru lives. This scene is when Benimaru and his other friends encounter a few internals, leading to them fighting, which eventually leads to the scene shown above.

Fig. 3.1 A closer look of Benimaru punches
14th April 2022

I really like this shot in the scene. What I like especially about the scene is how the punches clip looks. As you can see, there are two critical things to witness here. Firstly, the bright colour yellow of the stomach indicates where the punches hit and secondly, the most impactful part in this scene is the crack line coloured in blue; this shows us, the viewer, the Infernal rib has been crushed by these punches given by Benimaru and how strong the punches really are. It just gives that crunch, ouch vibe, you know. I really love how vibrant the colour looks here, particularly in this shot, because it's as if the author is begging us to look there.

Fig. 3.2 The aftermath of Benimaru Punches
14th April 2022

Then this is where it proceeds to this scene, where Benimaru's punches destroyed the infernal. The infernal exploded after receiving Benimaru punches. In this shot, you can see how the body infernal exploded in half is coloured in black while at the same time, the background changes to bright white colour. The white background gives the black figure a more strong contrast, which draws the viewers' attention. And it is also a way to censor an actual death scene in animated series because you don't want to give it horrifyingly detailed to young viewers, right.

Week 4 / Lecture 4
As for Mr Hafiz's lesson, we had a Chiaroscuro exercise with him. We were taught step by step by him how to sketch a "pear" in various ways, such as adding shadows, colour contrast, duplicating shapes, etc., during the exercise. Mr Hazig then told us to try it ourselves, and this is my result.

fig. 4.1.0 Pear

Moving forward to Mr Anis' lesson, she taught us about Composition Theory, meaning the arrangement of the elements in visual design. In the lesson, I have learnt that there are four elemental composition visual rules and six different types of shots. Those are:

    4 Basic Composition Visual Rules

  1. Visual Narrative - Visual in the scene complements all aspects of the narrative
  2. Visual Flow - The scene has a clear flow of visuals that directs the viewer's eyes
  3. Visual Balance - The visuals in arrange to balance the composition in the scene
  4. Visual Hierarchy - Visuals are arranged in such ways that direct the viewer's eyes to specific details first

   6 Different Types of Shots

  1. Establishing
  2. Bird's Eye view (Overhead Shot)
  3. Frame within a frame
  4. Medium Shot (Three-quarters Shot)
  5. Close-up
  6. Worm's Eye View

Proceeding to the next one, Mr Anis gave us the next task,

 .

Week 5 / Lecture 5
Mr Hafiz has given us another Chiaroscuro, another picture to illustrate. He has shown the steps needed to do it beforehand. Here is  my results:

28th April 2022

As for week 5 with Mr Anis, this time, she has taught another Composition Theory, although its about Fore, Mid and Back background this time. And as usual, she has given us another lecture report according to the topic we have learn today.

A shot from this scene shows the Fishman pulling the cannon rope with Patrick and Spongebob in the foreground because it is the closest to us viewers and where the main action is going. While the fish lady on the right side is in the middle-ground as she is behind where the action is going on, showing reaction to the action. And finally, the location where they are (inside the store) is the background.

PROJECTS
Task 1: Exercises - Vormator Challenge

Week 1 / Vormator Challenge Part 1
The task given to us for the week is Vormator Challenge. The challenge aimed to test our abilities in creating unique designs with limited shapes given to us, but the task assigned to us by our lecturer was a little bit different; it was to create a character with the given sets. The hard part of the challenge is we are not allowed to manipulate the shapes nor add any new shapes, but we are allowed to rotate and change the size of the shapes. I am honestly quite intrigued by this challenge. It made me ask myself what kind of unique character I could create out of this.

Fig. 1.2 Vormator Challenge Shapes
30th March 2022

Before creating my character, I ask myself these two questions, what kind of character do I have in mind to create? Then, how would I create it using these shapes? I did some research first, and then after a while, I found inspiration, Greninja. Greninja is a pokemon that has the ability of those ninjas. Greninja has the shape of a triangle and wears a cloak.

After finding an Inspiration, I would then proceed to creating my first draft of my Vormator Character. Here is it:

Week 2 / Vormator Challenge Part 2
After looking through some other people's ideas, I have found myself growing to hate my character; it looks a little bit off for me, in my opinion. But, in comparison, everyone did so well in theirs. I spent hours thinking about what I could do to improve my character; then, after some time, I got an idea to put a cloak on my character to make it better. Though at the same time, it is pretty hard to make a cloak, I had no idea how would I make one until I saw this picture.

Here is an improved version of my character using the picture above as a reference.

Fig. 2.9 Attempt 2 on Vormator Character
7th April 2022

I needed confirmation that this character would be good for my Vormator Challenge, so I asked Mr Hafiz. His response was positive; he liked it; it's unique to him since none has used the Chevron shape before as the head. I was pretty happy hearing this from him. And so, proceeding to the next step, I decided to experiment with colours, what colour would fit this character.

Week 3 / Vormator Challenge Part Final
Unfortunately, in the end, I wouldn't say I liked any of the colours, so then I would stick to the very first colour variant I did. The colour blue, red, yellow and black.

Fig. 3.3 Final colour choice
14th April 2022

As you can see here, there are two styles of character, one is without the scarf, and the other is with the scarf. At first, I wasn't sure what to choose between the two, but after some feedback from my friends, I decided to pick the one with the scarf style. However, before finalising it, I, too, decided to touch upon the character a little bit. And here is the final product of it:

Week 4 / Vector Illustration Part 1
As for the second part of the exercise, we are told to create a game character card for the character made in Vormator Challenge. As for part 2, I started with a background colour palette. I have decided to make the background a desert for my character with the colour palette given.

Here is my first draft in drawing the background:

Week 5 / Vector Illustration Part Final
According to the last week's work, I have created a background which I like, so I didn't bother doing a second one. However, since I like it so much, I decided to put the character in the background to see its appearance. So, here are two variants of it:

Fig. 5.2 Background with texture in it 1

Fig. 5.3 Background with character in it 2

I'm not too shabby with the second variant, but I prefer the first one to stick with those. I am not wasting any more time; I created a game card out of this, inspired by an anime named Vanguard. Vanguard is an anime about a famous playing card named Vanguard, so it's expected to see many tournaments shounen base type in this anime. It is quite a fun anime, and I must say since it goes deeper and darker further it gets.

     Name: Toark
     Ability: Invisibility
     Power: 10000
     Shield: 5000
Background: Toark is from a clan known as Paladin; it is not a literal paladin. Paladin is an assassination clan that has many talented ninjas. But it was massacred by other clans. Toark is the last remaining survivor of the clan. Therefore, he decided to avenge his family, which was slain by other clans.

FEEDBACKS
  • Good character, should try to remove the lines
  • Unique character, never seen before
  • Stick to the first color
  • The background is great, we should stick with the first variant

REFLECTION

The exercise has been an enjoyable adventure for me. Although it was pretty hard, I find it intriguing and exciting to create a character with restrictions. It challenges my creativity. There were ups and downs moments, such as when I struggled to find a way to improve my character looks and when Mr. Hafiz complimented my character design, and called it unique. As for the second part of the exercise, it was fun, too; the idea of being able to create my game card was sweet. I have gotten the chance to develop my vanguard character with this exercise, although I don't find the results appealing as I had not enough time to finish the coloring. But overall, the exercise is a great and fun learning process.
