LECTURES

Week 9 / Project 2
By this week, everyone would have finished the first project. Moving on to the second project, called Sense of Place. We are tasked to create a piece drawing of a place that might have been memorable to us, or what you see in daily life, or could be an entirely imaginary place you thought of.

What did I learn in Week 9?

Sense of Place

The importance of observation
You might wonder how someone can design an imaginary place in a clinch. Well, that is by being observant, paying attention to surroundings in detail, and being analytical. But, of course, some sources of it can be artifacts, physical surroundings, daily happenings, and more.

How to improve observation?
For those pondering thoughts such as, how can I be more observant? And how do I improve my observation skill? I learned this week that there are 8 ways to enhance the power of observation.

- Firstly is to know your subject, with this it will be easier for you to notice more if you understand it.

- Secondly, slow down and look outward; this lets you focus better.

- Thirdly, try something new; by trying something new, you will be more observant of your surrounding.

- Next is to cut distractions which will improve your concentration.

- Number five is working on your mental strength, which will help you focus better since you have improved your mental strength.

- The sixth way is to test your observation power by playing a memory game; it improves your observation power.

- The most obvious is to list down what you find interesting.

- And finally, be curious; you tend to be more observant when you're curious.

I wanted to see a few examples of Sense of Place designs people have created to expand my knowledge of it. So it would be helpful for my task and future.

Week 10 / Project 2 Feedback
In week 10, similarly to project 1, we demonstrated our progress to Ms. Jinchi, and we would get feedback from her. Then proceeded with our work using the feedback we obtained from Ms. Jinchi.

TASK

Week 9 / Project 2: Sense Of Place Part 1
I have always found sunset as memorable anywhere. It can be on top of a mountain, by the side of the road, outside of your bedroom window, etc. Sunset is so fascinating that it caught my interest. And one of the best moments I encountered with the sunset was when the sunset rays went through the LRT. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of it, so I will be doing some visual research and use my imagination on how should I portray this scene.

 Visual Research
I have no pictures of it, nor can I find one good LRT picture with sunset, so I decided to pick these pictures instead as they are similar to LRT.

I didn't have time for a sketch, so I postponed it to next week.

Week 10 / Project 2: Sense Of Place Final Part
As I didn't do any sketches, I didn't receive any feedback regarding a drawing. So I just proceeded with my sketch this week and will try to finish it before the deadline. As I suggested last week, I wanted to recreate a scene of sunset rays going through the LRT windows and creating beautiful scenery in the LRT. So I started by sketching the inside of the LRT.

Sketch 1

Here is pretty much how it looks inside of an LRT. I drew a girl in it, too, just to keep realistic. I mean, there should be a person inside an LRT, right. But, it looks good, so I tried coloring the sketch without further ado.

Sketch 2

I must say, I still find coloring quite hard to do. But I tried it regardless. Here I was trying to go for a darker look which is why it looks dark. Hence with the sunset, as you can see by looking at the window, going through the LRT creates multiple reflections inside the LRT itself.
But I wasn't satisfied with this sketch; therefore, I sketched it a little more to see better results.

Sketch 3

I added more citizens to the LRT to keep the LRT busier. But I feel as if something is still missing in this sketch.

Final Sketch

In the final sketch, I added a shadow in the drawing to give it more depth although I am still quite a beginner with shadings, shadows, and all.

FEEDBACKS

Project 2: Sense Of Place

Week 9
Sense Of Place: I find my ideas to be okay. I would definitely re-create with my own style, which would be a little cartoonish or anime-ish.

Week 10
Sense Of Place: My biggest weakness is still coloring; I need to find a way to get better at this. I tried my best, but I feel I did pretty okay with this project.

REFLECTION

Project 2 / Sense Of Place
This project is definitely my weakest project so far. I wasn't good with the shading, coloring, etc. I feel disappointed in myself even though I did my best. Trying to re-create a scene from memory is much more complicated than I thought, especially the sunset rays; I couldn't grasp how it works, which failed me. Honestly, I wanted to switch to another drawing, but I had no time. I pretty much used up all my time creating the sketches. I learned that I would have to learn more about coloring, shading, etc. The part that comes after drawing linearts.
