LECTURES
Week 11 / Final Project
In week 11, we finally got Ms. Jinchi to start with the final
Project. The final Project is called Visual Analysis. We will visually
analyze an artwork, meaning a poster, billboard, or Illustration of
our choosing, within the theme given to us by Ms.Jinchi, "Reduced
Inequalities." We would then have to create our own artwork inspired
by your chosen artwork.
What did I learn in Week 11?
Visual Analysis
- It is a method of understanding
design that focuses on the visual elements and principles.
- A description and explanation of visual
structure for its own sake.
- It is to recognize the choices a designer made in creating the design and to
better understand how the formal properties of a design communicate
ideas, content, or meaning.
- It is a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images.
-Practicing visual Analysis sharpens critical judgment skills, allowing
people to seek answers instead of passively receiving
information.
There are three phases in Visual Analysis.
Phase 1: Observation
- It means closely looking at the visual elements of
a design.
- Without knowing anything about the design, you try
to describe carefully and accurately in your own words what does the
design trying to say.
Phase 2: Analysis
- It requires making a statement about a work based
purely on your evidence from your observations.
- Or, it requires you to think of your observations.
Phase 3: Interpretation
- A combined fact from your observations,
descriptions, and design work analysis.
- Historical context that you find in trustworthy
published sources.
- Stuff like what is the meaning of the design.
- And what was the purpose of the design.
Week 12 / Final Project Feedback
After we are done picking a design and clearing all three phases of
visual Analysis. We got feedback from Ms. Jinchi regarding it. Then we
would proceed with our sketches and final results.
Week 13 / Final Project Feedback
She gave
feedback on our ideas exploration, sketches, and final results. So
then we can all finish our last blog by next week.
TASK
Week 11 / Final Project: Visual Analysis Part 1
According to the module instruction, we
would have to find an inspiration design that relates to the theme,
"Reduce Inequalities," and we will have to use all our knowledge from
previous assignments and lessons to give our visual Analysis of the
design in this week. So I decided to find one on Pinterest, which took
me an hour to find.
Chosen artwork

I found the artwork of a poster that
focuses on social class on Pinterest. It is an illustration made by
Oliver Munday. I chose this for my final Project because I wanted to
spread that there is inequality in social class in terms of income.
The rich will just get richer, earning more than ever, while the
poor will be poorer.
Observation
From my observation, this artwork has been designed in a portrait format. Looking at the color used here; yellow, brown, white, pink, green, and blue, it seems that this artwork has been created traditionally using a pencil and colored pencil. The shades are further proof of it. Well, it can be made digitally, but it seems unlikely. Overall, it's a simplistic artwork with few details; the colors give it a vintage look, and you can tell what it means by looking at it once.

Analysis
This artwork is
asymmetrically balanced. I can analyze that
contrast has been used to its fullest here. It
emphasizes the baby at the top of the artwork,
surrounded by the bright vintage yellow color. The outfits the baby
is wearing with the money in his hand and cigarette in his mouth
symbolize a rich person, while the hands below look as if
they're trying to reach out to the rich baby. The
repetition of hands found below can also be interpreted as a
unity because of the various skins and colors used in
the artwork. And lastly, movement can be seen below,
looking at the hands in the artwork.
Interpretation
This artwork is an illustration by Oliver Munday, found in an
article published by Jill Lepore in 2015. It talks about the issue
of the rich just getting richer, and the poor just getting poorer,
inequality in income. A famous phrase said by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Moving on, I find this Illustration is similar to Adam Nickel's
illustrations, a talented Brisbane-based illustrator. He was
influenced by mid-era design. His artwork is known for its quirky
characters, tactile texture, and vintage color palette. A retro
artist. The similarity I found is mainly the tactile textures and
vintage color palette.

Week 12 / Final Project: Visual Analysis Part 2
After finishing
the visual Analysis with my chosen artwork of mine, I decided to
search for any more visual references that relate to the rich getting
richer and the poor getting poorer. So I can start with my own
artwork.

Week 13 / Final Project: Visual Analysis Final Part
I began coloring the sketch as I finished the sketch last week. And here are the progress
of it.
Color 1
Here trying to use color in my Illustration
by utilizing the contrast theory method.
But I didn't like the contrast color, so I
switched to different colors. Then I would get the result above,
which is relatively flat.
Color 3
Since the color looked flat, I tried shading it
a little bit and putting shadow where is necessary.
I tried coloring it back to the previous colors
while tweaking a few things along the way.
I fixed
up a few things, and at the same time, I added a reflection to the
main objective in the Illustration. And I feel like this is the best
I can do within my skill set. So, therefore, that's the end product.

Rationale
Why is the gap between rich and poor getting bigger? Why are the rich getting richer while the poor are getting poorer? Questions make a lot of us wonder. The main reason for this is the great inequality in wages and salaries as the high-skilled have benefitted more from technological progress than the low-skilled. In addition, reforms to increase competition and make labor markets more adaptive, such as promoting part-time work or more flexible hours, have increased productivity and brought more people into work, particularly women and low-wage workers. However, the surge in part-time and low-pay jobs has widened the wage disparity.
The artwork I have created here shows that the rich are lazying around while the poor do the hard work. Although despite this, the rich are still getting richer, not the poor. The rich are not concerned about the poor; they just want more money despite what they have. Which cost the poor to get poorer. And one rich person that gets more prosperous costs thousands of poor to get poorer.
FEEDBACKS
Final Project: Visual Analysis
Week 11
Visual Analysis: I felt that I came up with a good idea.
Week 12
Visual Analysis: Sketch looks interesting. Maybe I should color it.
Week 13
Visual Analysis: Nice contrast, coming from me.
REFLECTION
Final Project: Visual Analysis
I have never been concerned nor thought about the inequalities happening around the world as they never happened to me. So you can say that this final Project opened my eyes in a sense. How unfair the world is, and many things need to be discussed to fix it. But I guess that would be quite a challenge looking at the condition of our world. Anyway, regarding how I feel about the Project. Yes, it opened my eyes, but I wouldn't say I enjoyed it because it stressed me out. I have close to zero knowledge of these kinds of stuff. And then it was pretty hard to come up with a decent design. And so on. Although, I would not say my design is good. Same old story, I still am bad at coloring, and I plan to practice it throughout my summer break to improve so I can prepare for the next challenge.
