LECTURES

Week 1 // 01.09.2022

Lecture 1: Introduction to the Module
In week 1, we were introduced to Mr.Kamal Bahrin, our lecturer for the module. At the start of the class, Mr.Kamal tried getting to know each of us. After that, we would start the course with an introduction to the module, what we would be expected to do, what we going to learn, what skills we would achieve, and so on. We were advised to own a drawing tablet for an easier time in the module.

What did I learn in week 1?

12 Principles of Animation

Week 2 // 08.09.2022

Lecture 2: Exercise 1
We were informed we would be starting exercise 1, Bouncing Ball Animation, and were taught how to do it by Mr.Kamal in the second week of the module. We also learned the fundamentals of Bouncing Ball Animation in class.

What did I learn in week 2?

Animation Principles: Fluid & Flow

Week 3 // 15.09.2022

Lecture 3: Exercise 2
I was sick this week; therefore I didn't come. But I did know we were given task 2, Exercise 2: Bouncing Ball With Tail Animation. As I was absent, I read through Mr. Kamal's notes and did my studies.

What did I learn in Week 3?

Animation Principles: Elasticity & Flexibility in Animation

Week 4 // 22.09.2022

Lecture 4: Exercise 3
After we were all complete with Exercises 1 and 2. We were given Exercise 3 this week, Emotion Poses. We learned how to draw a character to help us with the exercise. And were shown by Mr. Kamal how to execute the exercise.

What did I learn in week 4?

Animation Principles: Solid Drawing

Week 5 // 29.09.2022

Lecture 5: Exercise 4
The final exercise was assigned to us, Turnaround Animation. We were shown the basics, tipis, and tricks on how to do it. Mr.Kamal even demonstrated how to do it (a little bit).

What did I learn in week 5?

Animation Principles: Perspective Drawing

EXERCISES

Week 2 // 08.09.2022

Exercise 1: Bouncing Ball Animation

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/10PqnULH3l5v7MfWrz_-DN27mFb-WcOw2/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

I started Exercise 1 by rehearsing what I learned from Week 1 - 2 class to get the idea of how to animate a bouncy ball. That was Timing, Spacing, Slow in & Slow out, and Arcs. After rehearsing, I started sketching the ball on my Procreate (I am more comfortable doing it on Procreate than Adobe Animate).

After animating it on Procreate, I noticed that I didn't read the instruction properly and had to use the settings "1280 x 720". I instead used "2224 x 1668". But luckily, it was easy to change it.

(If you might be confused, I thought it would be nice if I made the ball move by itself as if it was alive, which is why it rolled first and then jumped).

Exercise 2: Bouncing Ball With Tail Animation

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/18PYu2j6KJXnFamDTQpavkR5dX9N5_Xgz/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Exercise 2 requires us to apply the Principles of Squash and Stretch and the Principles of Drag. Including the previous principles from Exercise 1, and we would have to apply that to the new Bouncing Ball With Tail.

As usual, I started by watching a couple videos to get a sense of it. Then I started drawing it on my procreate, and here are the results I got.

After a few tweaks here and there, I finally finished the animation of the Bouncing Ball With Tail. (Added the Principles of Squash and Stretch and Principles of Drag).

Exercise 3: Emotion Poses

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/17RcR5k0okI2QyQJFgc1sjMTkHbf6yGPX/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

In Exercise 3, we are tasked to find an image of a character in Emotion; it could be sad, happy, angry, scared, etc. To identify a critical point that tells a story. To draw on it are lines of action, structure, proportion, silhouette, and basic form.

Around the same time, we were given this exercise. I had just done drawing an OC. An original character of mine. Therefore on an impulse, I decided to use that as a reference for this exercise.

I made a copy of my character in a separate layer so it would be easier to draw the line of action, structure and proportion, silhouette, and basic form. It didn't take that long to finish up the drawings.

As for the final step, I animated the stages.

Exercise 4: Turnaround Animation

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/18SPHiiO2DXsJakZ-ycfebQqIO-4bKkrI/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

As for the final exercise, 4, Turnaround Animation, we are tasked to draw a character from head to toe, in all 360 angles, within 8 drawings. The first character to mind was Arnold from a cartoon series called "Hey Arnold!". So I immediately search google for reference images on Arnold.

Before sketching the character, I watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to draw characters and even reread the notes given by Mr. Kamal. Here are the results:

As I went through the instruction again, I remembered that I had to put together the rough and clean sketches, not separate them. Therefore I did precisely that for the next step. Also, I proceed with animation afterward.

FEEDBACKS

"Feedback has been mentioned under Exercises."

REFLECTION

Week 1 // Exercise 1: In the first exercise, I learned how to time and space out my drawing, the bouncy ball. It didn't take me too long to get the hang of it. But I gained some important information here, that timing and spacing are essential to draw a good animation.

Week 2 // Exercise 2: The Principles of Squash and Stretch and Principles of Drag were taught to help by Mr. Kamal to proceed to exercise 2. To make the ball movement realistic, these principles were needed. This exercise challenged me as I am a beginner in animating, so the fact that I needed to include a tail movement, including the ball being squashed and stretched, challenged me, but I managed to get through it.

Week 3 // Exercise 3: Probably the second easiest exercise out of all the exercises. I am knowledgeable about creating a character because that's what I have been doing before taking animation class.

Week 4 // Exercise 4: I enjoyed this exercise mainly because we needed to draw a character of our choice from 8 different angles. I have never been able to draw a character accurately from different angles (it always looks different somehow) but with this exercise. I was able to sharpen my ability to draw a character from different angles.
