PROJECT

Final Project: Stop Motion
In the final project, we must create a less than 60 seconds stop motion video with some moral to the story or purpose. It needs to be in 1920x1080, 24 frames.

One more thing to add, this should be done with a partner, but I don't have any; therefore, I am doing this alone, which might take longer to finish.

Part 1: Ideation
Before I started sketching and writing down my ideas. I watched a video of stop motion created by my seniors first to better understand the project. After watching a couple of them, this one caught my interest as it feels unique because the senior used multiple objects to create this stop motion. It's pretty cool, and it impresses me.

After watching the video above, I wanted to create a similar video. Creating awareness, that is. As I could be more creative, I would use the most common tool to create stop motion, Lego. I plan to create awareness, specifically on how to protect yourself from earthquakes.

Why earthquake? It's mainly to create awareness on how to protect yourself from earthquakes, and the other reason was because of one of the episodes from a tv series called Sheldon.

To begin with, I have started to write and draw down what and how I will accomplish this.

Writing:
  • Two characters.
  • One good & bad ending.
  • Different endings for both characters.
  • The consequences of not knowing & knowing how to protect yourself from earthquakes.
  • Two different sides.

Part 2: Recording
Before I could even start recording, I needed the set, materials, characters, etc to be there. So I went ahead and picked up an old bag full of Legos of mine and started creating the whole set. I took the character from one of my sister's collections. I needed to learn how to build anything with Legos without instruction. Therefore I went for tutorials on YouTube after about 2 hours of meddling with the Legos. I was finally done creating the sets.

Without further ado, I set up the place, lights, and tripod to start recording. I used an Ipad, an Android flash from both left and right, and study light from the top. I had to stack many cd covers to get the set to be the same height as my tripod. After it was all done, I switched off my room light and closed the curtain, practically closing off any light sources except the one I use for recording. Which I then started recording.

It was definitely a long and complicated process. It took me about the whole day to finish recording as I kept messing it by accidentally crushing the legos, moving the set, moving the tripod and so on. After it was all done, and as I was using a stop motion app from my phone, I could export it and then put it in my laptop folder. There are around 10 scenes, with about 100-250 frames shot.

Part 3: Editing
Moving on to the editing, I have only started this on 16th June 2023 because I have gotten sick since I finished the recording. But anyway, let's start by talking about how I started it. To begin with, I started by adjusting the import settings because it can only work before the videos have been imported themselves. I changed the still image default duration from 5 seconds to 5 frames.

I then imported the stop-motion photos. It became a video because of the import settings. I changed the sequence settings from 30 to 24 frames per second. After that was accomplished. I exported the video. And then imported it into a new Adobe Premier Pro as a new project. I can easily manipulate videos by adding sounds, background noises, music, intro, outro, colour grading, etc.

Without waiting, I began by adding an intro to the stop motion, so it wouldn't be bland. I chose to show the tile at the intro, with fade-in, out and zooming-in-out effects.

I didn't want to push myself to sickness again, so I took a break and planned to continue the next day. And as the next day began, I took on where I had left off yesterday. To top my video off, I began relentlessly searching for appropriate sounds to include in my videos. After about 30-40 minutes of searching. I found the right sounds to use. I used the lesson taught in Mr Martin's class and shaped some of the sounds to match the video.

Finally, to finish up the editing of the video. I colour graded a bit to it so it would look better in general, and I added an outro saying words of caution to let the audience remember what to do in an earthquake situation. After exporting it from Adobe Premier Pro, I uploaded the video on YouTube.

REFLECTIONS

Final Project: Stop Motion
Yes, I had no partner for the Final Project but no problem. Anyway, the objective of my video was to create awareness about how to prevent an injury or the worst case scenario, death. If no prevent, at least it minimizes the number of injuries and deaths. Knowing that, I used Lego to create the stop motion as the easiest tools I can use because I am only a one man in this project. Overall, even though it was tough doing it alone, I learned a lot as I was doing the Final Project, and I hope my message comes through.
