PROJECT

Project 1: Audio Editing Exercises
Project 1, an audio editing exercise, will be split into two parts. Project 1A and 1B, Audio Dubbing and Sound Shaping.

Project 1A: Audio Dubbing
For Project 1A, Audio Dubbing. We are required to add audio tracks to the character's dialogue, the background sound, and ambient noises using our own audio or one that can be found online to the video with no sound prepared by Mr Martin. There are four tracks to the dialogue, one for each character, three for four sound effects (complex sound) and another for ambient sound.

I started by importing and watching the video on Adobe Premier Pro. I began looking for audio that could be used in the video. I downloaded many of them and had multiple versions for one audio because I wasn't sure which would fit.

I first added the ambience sounds to the video and checked out the audio I had downloaded. I tried different versions and picked which I liked that suited the video. I then started cutting the audio and syncing it with the video.

Following the second step, I added the effect sounds to the video. It took a bit longer time as I needed it to match the video movement. Finding the right footsteps audio was the hardest for me compared to the rest.

Finally, I added the dialogue sounds to finish editing the video. I started by typing down the dialogue found in the video, and then I recorded the dialogue using my voice using my phone as a mic. I used an app called Voice Memos, downloaded on the phone. I completely removed the distracting background noises by enchanting the recorded sounds I recorded using the Voice Memos app itself.

I transferred the audio from my phone to the laptop and finally added the sounds to the video. I changed the pitch of the audio using the pitch shifter effects so each voice matches the character dialogue. Although the girl's voice was repeating, I couldn't find a way to fix it, so I just left it as it was.

Project 1B: Sound Shaping
The second part of Project 1 is sound shaping. We must download the audio given by Mr Martin and manipulate one of the audio into various tones; phone call, bathroom, cave, and closet; using what we have learned from his class.

<iframe src="https://drive.google.com/file/d/17P_gEQ4VLquQ1E8MHNUyDpBtJ04L7J6A/preview" width="640" height="480" allow="autoplay"></iframe>

Firstly, I downloaded the materials shared with me by Mr Martin. There are the audio sounds we need to manipulate in Adobe Audition.

I needed to use Audio 2_40 only for part b of this project. The slide shown above helped me quite a lot. I followed the instructions in the slide to manipulate the audio in three different effects. Those are phone calls, closets and bathroom effects. I used a parametric equalizer to get both phone call and closet effects. And I used reverb to get the bathroom effect.

As for the final effect, that is a cave. There wasn't any instruction shown on the slide. Therefore I had to find out how to do it using the knowledge I learned from the slide. It took a bit of trial and error, but I did it. I used reverb to get the effect of the cave.

I then applied each of the effects I had done and exported it into my file as mp3 because that was what the instruction said. Here are the results I have gotten.

REFLECTIONS

Project 1: Audio Editing Exercises

Project 1A: Audio Dubbing
Audio Dubbing was an excellent project, as it widened my knowledge of using Premiere Pro and helped me with my future projects. I was able to do it without a problem. However, finding the right audio and doing trial and error with it was time-consuming. This is probably because many professionals create audio and have voice actors for each character. Overall I find it pleasant to learn a few more about Premiere Pro.

Project 1B: Sound Shaping
Sound Shaping was an exciting project because I was intrigued by how easy it is to manipulate an audio sound using Adobe Audition. After all, it's a little harder to do in Premiere Pro. I would say that it's easy to follow instructions but hard to do yourself, incredibly, when you're not familiar with the sound you want or Adobe Audition. Because that happened to me, it took me minutes to do the effects following the guides, but I took a bit more time doing it myself. Overall, I am glad I learned about Adobe Audition because I will definitely use this for my following projects to help get better audio quality.
